A LITTLE CLARITY

Understanding your deadline

A few things to know before you take the next step.

What is a statute of limitations?

It is the legal time limit for starting a lawsuit. The length of time and when the clock starts depend on the state and the type of claim. This tool estimates the filing deadline for a limited set of personal injury cases; it does not determine whether you have a valid claim.

What can change my deadline?

Being under 18, certain legal disabilities, government involvement, delayed discovery, and other rules that pause or extend time can change the result. Different claim types, changes in law, court orders, and filing in another jurisdiction can also matter. Insurance notice deadlines may be much earlier. Workplace, medical, intentional-harm, exposure, and wrongful-death claims are outside this tool’s scope.

What if the estimated deadline has passed?

Do not assume you have lost the right to sue. A different start date, an exception, or a rule that pauses the clock may apply. Contact a qualified attorney promptly to review your circumstances.
